What is AI Overview
What is an AI Overview?
An AI Overview is the AI-generated answer Google shows above traditional search results, built from and citing a small set of source pages.
When Google decides a query deserves one, the AI Overview answers first — the classic results start below it. The answer is generated, but its sources are not: Google names the pages it drew from as citations, and that short list is the part a site owner can actually win.
For a query with an AI Overview, being cited puts your page inside the answer itself. Ranking well merely puts you underneath it — which is why PingSerp measures the citation as a first-class fact, next to the position.

Every keyword gets one of three verdicts.
A yes/no answer would flatten what actually happens on the page. Every check — and every day of tracking — files the keyword into one of three states, and each state tells you something different.

- The AI Overview cites your page. You get the verdict with its count — “✓ Cited — 1 of 6.” — and the full source list next to it, your domain marked as you.
- In the AIO, not citedsomeone else is
- “6 sites are cited. Yours isn’t.” The answer exists and quotes other sites — and the list names exactly who got in, so “why them” becomes a question you can study instead of guess at.
- No AI Overviewclassic results
- Google shows classic results for this query today. The state is recorded anyway: AI Overviews arrive and leave without notice, and “when did this query get one” is an answer worth having on file.
There’s a fourth signal for the state between states — changed, still cited: the AI Overview still cites you, but the source set around you moved. You stay in the answer while the company you keep changes.

Citation states don’t drift, they flip — one daily wave you’re a source, the next you’re not. So every state carries its date: the app’s AI Overview view reads cited — since Jul 24 per keyword, sources counted, nothing averaged away.
Two of the tracker’s ten alert types exist just for this flip: aio_cited fires the day a keyword’s AI Overview starts citing you, aio_lost the day it stops. Both arrive in the wave digest — one summary after the daily wave, not a ping per keyword.

To check if your website is in Google’s AI Overview, search the keyword, look for the AI answer above the results, and expand its source list — or run a checker that reads the page for you. PingSerp’s free check returns that verdict in one of three states, with every cited source named.

How does AI Overview tracking work?
AI Overview tracking re-checks a keyword’s results page on a schedule and records three things each time: whether an AI Overview appeared, which sources it cited, and whether your page is among them. PingSerp runs those checks inside its daily wave, so citation history builds alongside rank history.
In the app, the AI Overview view gathers every tracked keyword into one table — status, source count and since-date — with filters for cited, in-AIO-but-not-cited, changed-while-still-cited, and lost.
Why is the AI Overview I see different from the checker’s?
Because AI Overviews aren’t stable: Google varies them by location, language, device and time, and sometimes regenerates the answer between two identical searches. A checker’s verdict is one clean, logged-out measurement at the moment you ask — repeat it daily and the noise resolves into a readable state.

Is the AI Overview checker free?

Does every Google search show an AI Overview?
No. Google shows AI Overviews on some queries and not others, and the set keeps shifting. That’s why “no AI Overview” is a recorded state in PingSerp rather than an error — if an answer appears on a tracked keyword later, the state changes and the date is kept.
Can I see which sites the AI Overview cites?
Yes. Every check lists the cited source domains, with the count in the verdict — “Cited — 1 of 6.” when you’re among them. Tracking records the same list daily, so you can watch the set change even in weeks when your own state doesn’t.
What are the aio_cited and aio_lost alerts?
Two of PingSerp’s ten alert types are dedicated to AI Overviews: aio_cited fires when a tracked keyword’s AI Overview starts citing you, aio_lost when it stops. Both land in the wave digest, next to whatever the same day’s ranks did.
Do AI Overview checks work in other countries and on mobile?
Yes — pick the country, language and device in the checker form and the verdict comes from that market’s Google. The selectors mirror the app: 43 countries and 23 languages today, desktop or mobile.
How is this different from rank tracking?
Rank tracking records where your page sits in the results; AI Overview tracking records whether Google’s answer above those results uses your page as a source. The two move independently — #1 with no citation is real, and so is a citation at #9. PingSerp records both in the same daily wave.
